Writing has Changed

With the migration of traditional print news writers to all things digital, the world has changed for writers. Copywriters, working for agencies, still have a gig, albeit a changed gig; often writing online content more than print copy. Those who still write for local, hometown newspapers, consumer magazines or trade journals, still write articles as they might have years ago. The digital versions of these outlets may require more of a focus on a list of keywords, but good writing is still key for SEO; just as it is key to bring readers back to publications. Quality writing, with relevant information, has always worked out well.

The world of writing has changed. A writer could write a book while sitting under an umbrella at the beach. There would not have to be a pencil or pen anywhere in sight. A magazine writer could write regional articles without ever having lived in the area they write about. A news writer can post a timely news story without ever getting close to a fax machine; their smart phone or 4G tablet will work fine.

It’s a new world for the writer. Those who are strong, respected writers still command a dollar or more a word. The masses of bottom feeders has grown and works for less than a penny a word. Writing because you want to bring a work of value to the client and reader will make you a comfortable living as a writer. Writing to put something in a document and churn out numerous articles and meaningless words will barely buy you a cup of coffee.

Writing has changed; whether for the good or the bad. Good writing remains the same.
