For anyone who has ever entertained the idea of moving to Arizona because of the “nice” weather during the winter months; think again. The summers here can be brutal and unforgiving and downright dangerous.
Except for the mandatory trips to work, for those not retired, and to the grocery store or bank, at all other times in the summer, it is akin to being under house arrest. You are relegated to the air conditioned environment, not only for comfort, but to maintain life.
Some people will write this off as just a “dry heat” or that it is only for “3 months.” Both of these assumptions are false. During the monsoon (usually July through September), it can be very humid outside. Those who claim that the heat is only for three months are not in touch with reality. The hot weather can start in May and run through late October.
Still, Maricopa County, where Phoenix sits, is the fastest growing county in the country. Thousands flock to the area without ever giving the long, extremely hot summers, a thought.
