Swing Out Sister Breakout – an 80s Classic

I have been on an 80s mostly “one-hit wonder” kick lately. There were actually a number of great songs that came out of the decade by artists who didn’t follow up their hit with another. There are actually more of these than most music lovers during that decade would think. The same can be said of the 1970s.

Here is a perfect example. The song “Breakout” was released in 1986 on the Mercury Records label by Swing Out Sister. The band came together in Manchester, England just a year before. Corrine Drewery, who is the female lead singer on this song, joined the two original band members in late 1985 just before the release of their more subdued hit “Blue Mood.”  Drewery would sing lead on that song also. Breakout would follow and was the band’s biggest hit of the decade.  The group had a hit with a song called “Twilight World” the following year that was a legit hit; including in the U.S.

The choice to shoot the video in black and white works well.  The band still maintains a Facebook page for fans.
