I have always loved watches. I think my love for watches began when I was a teenager and really got ramped up while in my twenties. I remember promising myself that if I hit a particular sales goal, I would go to the nearby Gucci shop and buy a gold-plated watch that I really loved. I own that watch to this day.
There are some brands of very high-quality watches that produce models that that are jaw-dropping to me. While the Swiss watches may be the most prized, I find many of the German watches to be the best looking stylistically and esthetically. There are some German brands where I like nearly every model produced.
One of these iconic brands is NOMOS Glashütte. NOMOS has perfected the minimalist look called Bauhaus-design. The company is located in Saxony. The brand produces their own in-house movements as well. Of the 13 collections of watches they produce, I think I like nearly every one of them. Here is one good example; the Club Campus:
The company also addresses one of my biggest gripes with modern watches, which is the case size. Many watchmakers only offer men’s watches in sizes from 38-43mm. That is far too big for most wrists in my opinion. It makes the watch look like a caricature of a proper-sized watch. NOMOS, on the other hand, makes many models that are 33-35mm, which is a much better range and just looks better on most average wrists. Other German brands that I like include: Sinn (pronounced Zin), Moritz Grossmann, Laco, Junghans, Daniel Malchert, Damasko, Botta Design, the ultra-luxury brand A. Lange & Söhne, Montblanc and MeisterSinger. There are some others as well and all produce time pieces that would enhance any wrist.
A good overview of many of these brands was recently done by Teddy Baldassarre. He cover 11 brands in this video that is worth watching.
